What to put on an invoice.

A good invoice removes every reason not to pay it. Here's the complete checklist — the fields you must include, the ones that get you paid faster, and a free template to copy.

What you can leave off

You don't need a logo, a long letterhead, or accounting jargon. A clean, scannable invoice gets paid faster than a fancy one. If you're not registered for tax, you don't add tax — just show $0 or omit the line.

Do I need to charge tax on my invoices?

It depends on where you are and whether you're registered for sales tax/VAT/GST. If you are, show it as its own line. If you're not, omit it. Check your local rules.

What invoice number should I start with?

Anything sequential works — many freelancers start at 0001 (or 1001 if you'd rather not look brand new). The only rule is that numbers are unique and never reused.

What's the best due date for a freelance invoice?

Shorter is better for cash flow. "Due on receipt" or "net 7" pays faster than "net 30". Most clients pay near whatever deadline you set.

Build it in 30 seconds, not 30 minutes.
